Some believe that vision loss is inevitable. With certain genetic or medical conditions, this statement may be a partial truth. However, for the average person, the opposite is often true. If you are concerned about vision loss, there are some practical things you can do to lower your risk for significant vision changes.
1. Wear UV Protection
Sunglasses are often viewed as a style statement but wearing UV protection when you are outside is very important if you want to protect your vision for as long as possible. Over time, as the UV rays from the sun penetrate the eyes, the risk of developing muscular degeneration and cataracts increases. Muscular degeneration thins the macula in the retina, which leads to vision changes, while cataracts alter the amount of light that can pass through the lens, which minimizes your view.
2. Eat Well
What you put in your body plays a very important role in how your body functions. So, without question, if you want your eyes to remain in good condition, you need to feed your eyes with the right type of food. Eating plenty of vegetables and fruits is often the best route to take. Foods rich in beta carotene and vitamin E, such as sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, and leafy green vegetables, are top tier for vision health.
3. Exercise Regularly
Ensure you make exercise a regular part of your lifestyle. A leading cause of vision loss is high blood pressure. Hypertension alters healthy blood flow to the retina and can also lead to damage in the blood vessels of the eyes, which can both lead to vision loss. While multiple things can lead to hypertension, exercise is one thing that can be used to minimize blood pressure, and ultimately, lower the risk for vision loss.
4. Put Health Before Beauty
One of the newer beauty trends is false lashes. When applied and cared for correctly, they are generally safe. Follow these tips to apply them safely. First, only apply lashes with glue intended to be used near the eye. If you use another type of adhesive with harsh chemicals and it gets in your eyes, vision loss could occur. Second, ensure you clean your lashes regularly. Failure to clean the lashes allows bacteria to accumulate on the lash surface, which could travel into the eyes, and cause a problem.
